Breakthrough for “the Belt and Road Initiative” project, China Telecom completes the first direct access optical fiber cable between China and Pakistan

On July 13, 2018, the opening ceremony of the key project “The Belt and Road Initiative” (B&R) – ” Pak-China Optical Fiber Cable” was held in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. Nearly 700 people who come from various industries in China and Pakistan attended the opening ceremony. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Pakistani – Moorek, the head of special communications organization General – Bajwa, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan – Yao Jing, and General Manager of China Telecom International Co., Ltd. – Deng Xiaofeng attended the opening ceremony as well.

Yao Jing, Chinese ambassador to Pakistan, said that the “Pak-China Optical Fiber Cable”” is the first cross-border cable which connects China and Pakistan directly. It was the early successes of “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor” project, which President Xi inaugurated in Islamabad in April 2015.

“Pak-China Optical Fiber Cable” starts from Urumqi, China, and across the Khunjerab port nearby China-Pakistan border to the city of Rawalpindi, Pakistan, with a total length of 2,950 kilometers. This project is also a strategic project for China Telecom to achieve the interconnection with neighboring countries. Recently, China Telecom and Pakistani partners successfully conducted the cross-border system testing and acceptance checking. The transmission indicators of the whole process are eligible and has fully equipped to the requirements for executing large-capacity services.

The launching of the ” Pak-China Optical Fiber Cable” project is a breakthrough in interconnection of infrastructure between the two countries and creating the history of landing cable connection between the two countries. This is an important milestone of the China and Pakistan cooperation in the field of communication and information technology. It is also the latest achievement for building the B&R between two counties. After the launching of the “China-Pakistan Cable” project, the communication delay between China and Pakistan has been greatly shorten, and build a new strategic channel for China, Middle East and Africa. As a basic subproject of the “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor” project, the “Pak-China Optical Fiber Cable project has greatly improved the infrastructure capacity of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and provide key capabilities for the “China-Pakistan Information Corridor” project.

Deng Xiaofeng, the general manager of China Telecom International Co., Ltd., mentioned that the “Pak-China Optical Fiber Cable has been in operation for a full decade since the project was launched. The cable across the Karakoram Mountains, Hindu Kush Mountains, Pamirs Plateau, and the Himalayas. It passes through the highest Khunjerab port in the world at an altitude of 4733 meters. The geological terrain is complex, and the altitude is high of the whole Journey. It also needs to pass through nearly 100 kilometers of no man’s land. China Telecom and their partners have worked together to overcome the difficulties about short construction period and construction difficulty. Finally, they completed the construction of cables, server rooms and support facilities and this dream of many years has finally come true. As the Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, Yao Jing said that this is the real “Digital Karakoram Highway”.

The opening of “Pak-China Optical Fiber Cable” will lay the foundation for promoting the core projects of “China-Pakistan Information Corridor” project and will play an important role in promoting the infrastructure interconnection and regional economic development between China and Pakistan.

Huawei and China Telecom Again Win ‘Best IoT Innovation for Mobile Networks’ Award

[Shanghai, China, June 28, 2018] Huawei and China Telecom have won GSMA’s Best IoT Innovation for Mobile Networks’ award at Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2018. The award recognizes the two companies’ success with an innovative suite of NB-IoT solutions that have won recognition in the industry.

A number of commercial applications have been incubated and deployed using China Telecom’s powerful IoT platform and the strength of its NB-IoT network coverage. The applications include connected cows, smart marathon, smart postboxes, smart meters, bicycle sharing, smart parking, smart street lighting, and environmental monitoring. These applications are widely used in over 40 industries, driving the large-scale commercial adoption of NB-IoT. This most recent award recognizes Huawei and China Telecom’s achievements and contributions through their continued innovation in IoT.

To collaborate with Huawei on incubation of IoT applications, China Telecom has established the Tianyi IoT Industry Alliance as well as IoT OpenLabs in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. The IoT solutions have already enabled a wide range of innovative projects across China.

For example, large dairy farms in Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, and Hebei have deployed the connected cows’ solution, allowing dairy farmers to analyze the health of their animals through real-time monitoring and big data analytics. This enables dairy farmers to track cow estrus more accurately, thus improving production efficiency and profitability.

In Qianjiang, Hubei and Wuxi, Jiangsu marathon organizers have been able to use smart bands in races, allowing them to analyze marathon participants’ health in real time to avoid any emergencies.

Shanghai and Beijing have deployed smart postboxes, making mail delivery more efficient.

In Shenzhen and some other cities, smart meters have been deployed so that water companies can reduce costs associated with pipe leaks and human error. This makes water circulation and operation more efficient.

Huawei has helped China Telecom deploy NB-IoT over its entire network. NB-IoT networks offer large capacity, wide coverage, and low power consumption, enabling IoT services to develop on a large scale. Huawei and China Telecom have deployed a more open full-stack Tianyi Cloud IoT platform, offering device management on the southbound interface and application enablement on the northbound interface. The two companies are working to build an NB-IoT ecosystem with this platform, to help customers succeed.

China Telecom Recognized in Gartner’s 2018 Critical Capabilities Report for Network Services in APAC

China Telecom and Huawei Announce Business Joint Innovation Center

China Telecom and Huawei have established a Business Joint Innovation Center (BJIC) to jointly develop differential, innovative products and solutions that will offer users information and communication services.

The BJIC model has transformed the traditional industry partnership. China Telecom to support Always Connected PCs

China Telecom has arranged to become one of the first operators to use their LTE networks to provide connectivity for the new Always Connected PC category of devices powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Mobile PC platform.

OEM brands Asus, HP and Lenovo have developed Windows 10 devices using the platform to be introduced through the first half of 2018.

As well as China Telecom, Italy’s TIM, the UK’s EE and Sprint and Verizon in the US have signed up as network operator partners for the launches.

Selected operators in some countries also plant to stock the devices in their own retail locations.

“With the support of our mobile operator partners, consumers now have the opportunity to enjoy superfast connectivity over LTE networks at an affordable price, anytime and anywhere.”

GDS, SDIC, China Unicom and China Telecom partner to develop upcoming data centre markets

GDS has entered into a non-binding agreement with China Unicom, China Telecom and SDIC to jointly develop data centres in selected upcoming markets in China.

GDS Holdings Limited (GD), a developer, operator of high-performance data centres in China was represented by William Huang chairman at the signing ceremony in Beijing. Chairman Huisheng Wang, representing the State Development Investment Corporation (SDIC), the largest state-owned investment holding company in China, while China Unicom and China Telecom were represented by its chairman’s Xiaochu Wang and Jie Yang respectively.

“We are honoured to participate in this LoI [letter of intent] with these leading state-owned enterprises. As the only private sector company in the consortium, our participation [is] evidence [of] the expertise and market leadership we’ve established over our 17-year operating history,” said Huang.

The agreement signed by all parties is a letter of intent representing the shared demand held by the four companies for large-scale data centre infrastructure and services in selected upcoming markets beyond the core markets. A demand driven by the growth of the Chinese digital economy.

In November, figures by Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) found that data figures mobile data traffic in China had risen by 148% year-on-year. Traffic grew to an average of 2.25GB per subscriber a month, while total mobile call minutes fell 4.5% year-on-year said

A pilot project is to be launched in the Tianjin market but the specific details of such are subject to further legal negotiation.

China Telecom adds 5G testing sites

China Telecom has announced the deployed a new 5G base station in Lanzhou, in China’s Gansu province, expanding its pilot project for 5G networks to six cities. The telco previously deployed 5G base stations in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Suzhou, Chengdu and Xiong’an new district in Baoding.

China Telecom said it plans to run laboratory and networks tests until the end of next year, before commencing pre-commercialization of 5G technology in 2019. The telco aims to launch commercial 5G services in 2020.

China Telecom set up its 5G station in tech city Shenzhen in early October covering various industrial zones including Shenzhen Software Industry Base. With these 5G base stations, the Asian operator said it can undertake end-to-end testing for key 5G technologies.

Last month, China Telecom signed an agreement with the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) to collaborate on several areas related to 5G including smart manufacturing, internet of things, smart cities, Big Data and networking.

China Telecom also said it is also looking into the use of cellular networks for emerging areas such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), the internet of vehicles.

China Telecom Bestpay to boost presence in mobile payment

China Telecom Bestpay, a wholly owned subsidiary of China Telecom Corp committed to mobile payment, announced Thursday plans to invest 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) in resources to boost its presence in the fast-growing market.

The company announced its marketing plan, which is aimed to reduce marketing costs and increasing revenue for Bestpay’s business partners. The plan will cover payment services, resource sharing and integrated marketing, according to Chen Yiwen, vice-general manager of the company.

According to the plan, China Telecom Bestpay will promote its payment service with a cheaper service fee and provide its partners a more user-friendly experience. China Telecom Bestpay will vary its service to different partners based on itheir business sizes, brands and revenues.

China Telecom Bestpay will achieve full resource sharing with its business partners in customer information, channels, risk management and big data, creating a leverage effect regarding branding and marketing.

In terms of integrated marketing, China Telecom Bestpay offered online and offline users a certain amount off in transactions through its product Bestpay, a third-party payment platform. Up to January 2016, the app had attracted over 290 million users and became the third-largest payment platform operator following Alipay and Wechat.

Philips Lighting works with China Telecom to boost smart city application

Philips Lighting Holding has cooperated with China Telecom to promote smart-city application in China through using its smart Internet-connected lighting technology and China Telecom’s NB-IoT (narrow band-Internet of Things) technology and networks, according to Philips Lighting senior vice president and Greater China president John Wang.

The cooperation will promote construction of smart-city infrastructure and development of smart-city application through connecting smart outdoor lighting systems with smart-city networks, Wang said. As China Telecom has set up an IoT open platform based on Ericsson Device Connection Platform (DCP) to offer IoT management services for global enterprise customers, smart-city application can be introduced to overseas markets via the open platform.
